Refurbishment Category – Discovery Health Head Office Extension, Sandton Central

Discovery Health, as one of the most prestigious health insurance companies, has grown healthily since its founding in 1982. This project was an extension and development of the existing building which sought to exploit evolution in glass architecture and the opportunities offered by advancements in concrete technology. The result was an eye-catching icon for one of the country’s blue chip companies.

Retail Category: Design Quarter Lifestyle Shopping Centre, Fourways

One of the first retail developments in Fourways, Johannesburg, this project explores the opportunity to exploit the normally benign climate of the city. Interior and exterior spaces open into and from each other, which is a departure from the standard air-conditioned retail development normally associated with South Africa. The development appears to have successfully stood the test of time, more than a decade after its inception.
