Winner: 15 Alice Lane
Located at the western edge of the bustling Sandton Central area, the glass and aluminium towers of 15 Alice Lane rise as statuesque architectural statements on the skyline of Johannesburg’s north-western suburbs. Set atop a six-storey basement, the 24,000sqm, 16-storey double tower structure provides office space for the legal firm Norton Rose Fulbright. The project employed cutting edge glass technology that had not been used in South Africa before. Paragon Interface undertook the sophisticated interior fit-out of the towers.
IOC International Olympic Committee Award for Quality Public Space:
Cape Town Stadium
With a permanent seating capacity of 50,000, the Cape Town Stadium has proven to be one of the most enduring images of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The bowl of the stadium rests on a raised podium, which doubles up as a promenade that overlooks the Green Point Common. The main forecourt was designed to align with the long-term vision for the development, which is to enable the hosting of gatherings and markets between or during stadium events. The main forecourt is connected to two other forecourts by intersecting bicycle and pedestrian routes.
