Cape Town City Park Competition
This design competition, located in the heart of Cape Town’s city centre across an open park, demonstrates the design considerations of a mixed-use scheme. All lower levels engage with street interfaces and draw inspiration from the local ‘stoep’ architecture found in and around the ‘Bo-Kaap’ area; while retail areas with individual entrances off all four streets are sheltered by a canopy. The façade extends through the centre of the tower, opening onto a green landscaped belt through the building.
The residential component consisted of two typologies: ‘The Courtyard’ consisting of single level apartments offering both a ‘stoep’ condition and a central landscaped courtyard with a range of amenities; and ‘The ‘Tower’ consisting of double-level apartments with double volume spaces facing both north and south, framing views onto Table Mountain as well as the ocean.
The existing parking floors above the retail zone were maintained and ways were proposed for these to have counter-cyclical uses. 8,000 sqm of office space with a central atrium allow for both single or multiple tenancy options. Amenity floors offer gyms, walkways, gourmet kitchens, braai areas and other lifestyle facilities; and, on the top level, a sky-bar offers 360-degree views over the entire city.
