This proposal for a refurbishment of an existing 19,000m² regional community shopping centre in Rietfontein was undertaken for Public Investment Corporation Properties (PIC Properties). The client brief highlighted a need to revitalise the centre, with additional amenities for entertainment, youth attraction outlets and cinemas; additional parking; and revised brand positioning and centre signage in order to cater for a wider LSM.
The approach was to keep the existing footprint and reclad the building with a new lightweight, crisp white cladding that would be complemented by a dark glazed façade to give the building a
modern, upmarket, sophisticated appeal. A new event and entertainment space was proposed to the south of the site, on the highly visible approach to the centre, to attract visitors. The design also included new entrances at street level to encourage more foot traffic through a direct connection with the urban environment; additional floors to the existing parkade; and strengthening of the existing food court. The intention was to modernise and upgrade the Mall to increase its attraction for all tenant representation and strengthen its position within the national retail landscape. The proposal also included the refurbishment of the adjacent existing residential component.
